3 Kings’ Day Eve
In most catholic countries, tradition calls for a shoebox full of grass for the kings’ camels that will bring presents to children. Like Christmas in the US but not as commercialized as the “big” holiday. As a kid I looked forward to setting by shoebox under my bed. Not sure how we never noticed 3 big camels entering our rooms to eat out of that box of grass. I remember one year forgetting to put our shoeboxes under the bed, so our presents were left outside in the yard where the grass was plentiful for the camels to eat. And then, just like that, no more present after age 12, we’ve graduated to adult’s “Present” day aka “Christmas” day. Not sure if it had to do with innocence lost, but once we turned 12, we were no longer consider children.
Thinking of this made me wonder about traditions. Traditions are so important to family values. At least they used to be. Too sad that in this day and age the value of traditions is dwindling down. Kids no longer appreciate tradition the way we did. Family values seem to be receding too. A materialistic mentality has taken over promoted by consumerism. It seems like the important values are being replaced by shallow and meaningless actions. Just an observation!
On this 3 Kings’ Day eve, I’m hoping for those traditional values to come back to stay. I’ll step outside tonight and wish upon a star for a much better world, a world more compassionate and respectful for one another.
Change starts with me!
